Did you show us the plan for the query and which indexes are available?
If you just saw 'natural' in the plan, looking hard at indexes might give a
clue.

If you are running MS SQL Server on the same box, could it be that MSSQL
ate most of (or all) the memory, leaving little free physical memory for IB
(forcing excessive disk activity) - just speculating, of course.
