You need to make sure that the Win98 machine also has and entry in
the services file for gds_db. Run ib_console, select the server you
want, and select Diagnose Connection, go to the TCP/IP tab, and run
all of the tests, you will probably get one of them coming back with
an error message.

We can assume that if telnet is working correctly, that the Windows
box can find the Linux box. However can the Linux box find the
Windows box, from the console, can you ping the Windows box by name?

Actually Windows checks first the existance of the DNS servers, this
is why it always wants to dial the connection, even for local stuff.
Then it looks at hosts, then actually checks the DNS servers. The
best way to get it to do what you want, is set up your own DNS server
on the gateway machine, then have it point to other DNS servers down
the line. You tell Windows to use your Gateways DNS server,
