First, you have to make sure you can reach the server at port 3050.
That's a good start :)

Next, what is your connect string?

I've managed databases via the internet several times now (on a
secured connection, that is) via InterBase Workbench (of course :))
without problems. I used sometimes the IP, other times the domain
name...
