I'd add Italian, if it were not that "milliard" in different
translations is anything that is and should be used all around the
world, AFAIK.

The bad thing is not that Americans invent their own conventions, it's
rather that they are sincerely convinced that the rest of the world will
or should conform to them. :-)
I think it's a matter of vision, rather than language. Examples abound.
