There are a couple of factors:
- If your db is corrupt, the engine may die and you'll get a report of a
fake network error.
- Some complex operations may defeat the server due to a bug in a recursive
call of the optimizer. I think this was fixed but after FB 0.94. (This bug
is present in IB4, IB5 and IB6, too.)
- Bad TCP packets, for a reason I'm not sure, may confuse the server and
crash it. In this case, the indirect culprit is a bad NIC or cable.
