The full answer is that the recent InterBase 6.0.1 security release removed
that ability; but it remains in the new Firebird release. However, there
may be defects, so the gbak and restore plan is recommended, even if you
are using the Firebird distribution.

Sorry - didn't mean to imply that IB 6.0.1 was recommended in preference to
Firebird - the opposite is true, since Firebird has fixed many more bugs.
