It depends on the type of applications you are wanting to work on. I moved over
from Builder6 a good few years ago now, and have been working with ADOdb as my
database layer in PHP.
http://www.bitweaver.org/ uses this and I have been developing all of my own
facilities on top of it. Firebird was running 'out of the box' last time I
checked and it will provide a kick start if these are the type of processes you
need to provide. All of my own sites are running on it :)
