As the guilty party ... I have to correct that a little bit. I still find PDO a
problem because of it's very narrow 'road map', but some of the problems have
been fixed in the more recent builds. In particular a problem with getting
'rows_affected' back. But if you only want to connect to Firebird, stick with
the generic driver.

It's availability is linked to php_interbase.dll and you WILL need both
available anyway. PDO does not have any of the database specific management
facilities! For PHP5.3, it can be built to go with the VC6 versions, but is not
included in the official builds, and it is quite probably that the whole of the
VC6 builds will be dropped by PHP at some, so the best path forward is to use
the VC9 builds of apache from apachelounge - http://www.apachelounge.com/download/

Just for the record ( so I remember ;) )
http://www.apachelounge.com/viewtopic.php?t=3831 has the current eaccelerator
extension to go with that. If you are not using a cache with PHP you will find
this improves speed a lot!
