There was a fault in the php sources starting with 5.2.2 which meant that the
blob_id was returned corrupted. After much discussion on the PHP list the
problem has been fixed in the nightly builds for 4.2.4, but it seems to have
got lost somewhere. Unless it's only actually been fixed for the windows builds.

I never did get a proper explanation on why the particular section of code had
to be changed, but the original change had not even been tested :(
http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=41429 is the relevant bug - which would seem to
need opening again?
