extra info regarding the server I'm trying to get working:

it's a plesk machine running on debian with php4 installed
(unfortunately I can't install php5 due to lots of sites that break with php5
- sure I could fix them but time doesn't allow it right now.)

no, its the first time I installed firebird on this machine.
(I installeed firebird2 btw because apt-get didn't give me any other choice)

the exact cmdline I used was:

apt-get install firebird2-classic-server firebird2-server-common firebird2-utils-classic libfirebird2-classic php4-interbase

the rest of the message just states which file the ibase_connect()
was called in.... in the mean time I have been fiddling and the message has
changed (I didn't even ntoice until you post made me double check!):
