Sorry, Lester, this doesn't come close to addressing my problem. As I
mentioned, I was off-topic: there's a regression bug in php4.something that
broke its ability for php4apache2.dll to behave properly with Apache2
(gazillions of hits on the same problem in Google). One person seems to
have solved it by moving ALL of the PHP4 dlls into the system
directory. :( I haven't resorted to that yet, but near-as-dammit). I
hoped I might find a particular Apache2/php distro combo that worked before
this bug was introduced.

I'll pick up the kits recommended by Philippe and (once more) start from
scratch.
