What you might have guessed :) It works.

That was one of the first things I did, but it didn't work the first
time around. I dumped the vars of the PHP script and saw that the
connection was in fact a persistent one, though I had called
ibase_connect! After I restarted both Apache and Firebird, I could
freely move between connect and pconnect and the returned connections
were the correct ones.

Indeed, the persistent connection is (as expected) not closed via
ibase_close() and then the SPs in use by it cannot be ALTERed. So,
during the development, one has to use plain connections instead...
