I have managed to compile the interbase.so, only after a re tar on the interbase ext directory. There must have been some corrupt files in there.

Not that it would bother PHP/Interbase installation, but
which version of FB1.5.

Have you checked out - 'Making PHP aware of Firebird'

I still have not got back to my SUSE box, but there are
plenty of people running PHP/Interbase on Linux, so it is
just a matter of kicking it in the right places :)
