PEAR is the 'extra' library of code that you can get by
lumping through the hoops of running the PEAR loader. (Read
the PHP install notes :) )

There is a PEARdb library, but I much prefer ADO db and
manually loading it. It's a bit like windows update - you
are not quite sure what the PEAR loader it is up to ;)

The samples given are 'pure' PHP4, both the PEARdb and ADOdb
libraries wrap that code in a more generic set of functions,
it's swings and roundabouts as to which is best.

I'm finding that ADOdb keeps most things tidy, so I've stuck
with that.
