The only problem I know of, is for accessing Unix/Linux path-based databases. If you specify an absolute path it should be something like:
jdbc:firebirdsql://server:port//path/to/database.fdb instead of the expected jdbc:firebirdsql://server:port/path/to/database.fdb
On the other hand, I think you should normally use aliases, not direct database paths.
The first locates the database at /path/to/database.fdb, the second one locates the database at path/to/database.fdb relative to some setting in the firebird.conf (can't remember which).
