We have many clients still on 1.4.2 (and FB 1.5, jaybird 2.1) and many
of them are not technical (and require external support people to do
almost anything). Upgrading Java could be one of those things that
scares some of our customers.
Having said that, a customer can stay on their current version
(including 2.1 jdbc driver) if they wish... and if they want our
software upgrades (including 2.2 jaybird) then this'll force them to
update!
