I found the problem. Many lines in that example have a space between <
and % charaacters (I just checked the faq.html file to make sure).
When I removed the space to get <% everything worked fine.

I guess this would be a trivial issue for a JSP programmer, but it
took me some time to figure it out.

It would be nice if those spaces were removed from the samples in
faq.html page.
