I just noticed that you would like to build RCP application on top of
Eclipse platform. You can also do that with Netbeans. It has also
platform (RCP) version where you build plugins. I can recommend you
browsing http://platform.netbeans.org and http://planetnetbeans.org
pages. I don't have too much experience with Eclipse RCP but I suppose
it's similar approach. I just started blogging on Netbeans platform
(actually I posted one tutorial :). You can find it on
