There are some nice OpenSource Java based DB engines out there.
My personal favorite is HSQLDB (http://hsqldb.sourceforge.net).
Cloudscape (becoming Apache Derby in the future) might be an
alternative as well, though I think that for an embedded solution
HSQLDB is more appropriate.
