Our current evaluation criteria
- needs to be cross platform (supports linux and windows NT & 2000)
- needs to support trigger & event system (bonus to pass parameters
across a network)
- database design tools
- reliability
- ease of installation
- supports stored procedures
- documentation
- online support/help and forums etc
- in-house experience
The main disadvantage for PostgreSQL at the moment is the way you
define stored procedures and nobody in the office has used it before,
it is also not as easy to get up + running on windows.
The main disadvantage for firebird is the linux design tools are not
as nice and you cannot use the super server to post events on linux
(see firebird-support question).
In the end there is not much in it and the final decision is not up
to me. I will keep you posted as to the outcome.
