With the exception of a couple of bugfixes I made a very long time ago,
there hasn't been any Interclient development in firebird.

I'm pretty sure you can set the charset in a DataSource or when requesting
a connection in the Properties object you supply. You should consult
Borland's interclient docs or the javadocs to be sure.
