I think I have solved this. It seems as if my program was creating in excess
of 16,000 prepared statements and this was causing the server to crap out.

This must be server problem. Check the interbase.log in your server
installation directory. You should see similar entries there too. And
if yes, as on IB-Support list. I hardly believe this is a problem
with JDBC driver. Maybe you can simply restart the server?
