it wouldn't fit the Q&A structure/workflow of SO, but I really can't
agree with that. I've been following for example firebird-support for
ages, and I see no difference whatsoever of the discussions, questions
and answers that appear there and those that appear on SO (on various
other topics). SO does support discussions with the purpose to find the
best answer to the posed question. And it does so very well! A lot
better than the mailing lists, in my humble opinion.
