Subject Re: [Firebird-general] few questions from noob

As you know, FB 3 is still in beta, meaning that there can be changes
in the ODS that would make a database created with beta incompatible
with the final release. If you can wait until RC1, you would be safe
regarding this problem (but still could suffer with possible bugs).

FB 3 will not be able to read ODS < 12 database (ie: created with FB
2.5 or older), so if you decide to start with FB 2.5 and move to FB 3
in the future, you must be prepared to create a migration routine in
your distributed apps, that would do a backup (with FB 2.5 embededd)
and a restore (with FB 3 embedded) to upgrade the ODS database.

I can't answer about the book.

GganFg> Hello,

GganFg> two days ago I noticed some thread in Lazarus/FPC forums mentioning
GganFg> Firebird. I knew about it from before, but never bothered to research
GganFg> more about always thinking that for my usage as application's fileformat
GganFg> and/or storage back-end Sqlite3 is good-enough.

GganFg> Now, after being interested to learn and use FPC/Lazarus, Firebird has
GganFg> fanned my interest...did some reading about it, installed it on my
GganFg> Debian (Sid), watched several slide-presentation, did some chatting in
GganFg> #firebird...and now have few questions...

GganFg> As someone who would like to use Firebird mostly as embedded database
GganFg> (of course, no idea what the future will bring about) and just aobut to
GganFg> start learning about it, do you recommend to start with 3.o which is
GganFg> available in Debian's "experimental" in order to avoid re-learning stuff
during 2.5 -->> 3.0 migration?

GganFg> What about the docs? 3.0beta2 release notes are extensive, but I wonder
GganFg> about QuickStart Guide and Language Reference? Are the old docs still
GganFg> mostly relevant for learning Firebird?

GganFg> Is there any plan to produce The Firebird Book Third Edition covering
GganFg> 3.0 in paper soon? (I simply like holding concrete books in my hand and
GganFg> despite having Kobo ereader prefer to read from the paper.)

GganFg> It seems Firebird is good option for FPC/Lazarus development, do you
GganFg> have any specific hints in regard?

GganFg> Let me also congratulate Firebird devs for making it possible to have
GganFg> Firebird as default (still experimental) database in LibreOffice!!

GganFg> Sincerely,
GganFg> Gour
