And just to bring in a  comparison, when I started at MySQL,
eight, maybe nine years ago now, Jim's Falcon project was going to
be part of V6 which would actually provide pluggable back ends. 
MySQL had sort of claimed to be pluggable for several releases, but
the only backends that worked were MyISAM, InnoDB, or NDB - all
in house projects.  

MySQL's most recent release was 5.7.  They canned the whole V6
code base.  That's with an engineering group in the hundreds and 
a QA group beyond measure.  The Firebird engineers deserve great
credit for being able to move their code base into a modern and
manageable format.
