I agree there are many changes in the engine but this can be done in
incremental steps or new subrelease branches and not all features delivered at once

3.0 Major Arhitectural changes deliver first release
3.1 new security features and major bugfixes
3.2 fine grained multi-threading
3.5 other changes

4.0 Another Major Arhitectural change (eliminate 32 column name limit)
