It's an change management issue , some software is made to work with
that version
and any change introduce more bugs that is why some people like the
long term support servers like
ubuntu LTS or centos even if there are known bugs (or features ) and
not the fedora that changes
too fast or debian unstable
and that version passed the QA team or many eyes but of course some
bugs will come and hunt us back

also firebird does have some compile scripts and can be build with
visual c / mingw or g++
so you can check out the stable branch (2.1.x) and can contribute with
bug fixing or comments
