But Firebird does not need any maintenance too. I made several installations
5 years ago, it was FB1beta, and it still works flawlesly (their knowledge
of FB is zero, so they would ask me in case of problems)

Exactly my experience with FB. (but only with 10-20 databases per fb server)

Which is not normal. Did you try to find out what the problem is ?
Can you send exact description to fb-devel list ? Do you use FB port
to some exotic OS other users do not use ?
