It depends on what type of virtual machine they have there :xen/kvm ?
Also you should do some tests, for high load sites is better to use
the real hardware
latency is lower also the io is higher , but if the traffic is not so
high then you can start with vps
but usually the hardware is shared with others and sometimes the
machines could hang if there is high load

truth is that what i will use in future is kvm and it runs at near
speed with real hardware
in fact you will not notice any speed diference because these days
virtualization is done in hardware
and instructions are not translated anymore but they run directly on
cpu (layer is done well)

in fact you can create an EC2 style cluster at home with kvm and dyndns
