Subject Re: [] Firdbird 2.0 vs the World

Sorry Firebird fans but I think this is a very important question for
Firebird futur. I tried many times to sell the idea of using Firebird.
What do I have ? No comparaison, poor documentation, no real opinions
except from fans, no customer feedback and no performance tests. I know
performance tests are also not available for big system like Oracle, MS,
etc but at least they have background.

When I started looking for database system I found Firebird but at that
time I let it go because of information lack.I still use Firebird but
also still fighting with my customers when it's time to justify the use
against MySQL or Postgresql. When it comes to choose an sql server I am
also facing the problem of replication which is also lacking (except for
MySql). Mysql started by showing some few databases benchmarks and
comparaison.

I made some few performance tests and didn't show it to my boss because
the results were not very good. At the same time this might be because I
don't have much information on how to configure it. There is few good
free database managers available right now for Firebird 2. I have to use
ibWebAdmin for that. I like the fact that I can use the embedded version
with my applications.

What I'm trying to say is that we need more from Firebird team or from
experienced users in regard of features, performances and advantages. We
just need tools to help us. It is too easy to say that database systems
are differents and use for different tasks. This is partially true. If I
need a simple transactionnal system for 80% of my customers, I have
three choices: MySql, Postgresql or Firebird. For me, a 1 page paper is
only good for promotional stuff and doesn't tell me the real things as
developper or user. I also know that Firebird is free and that the team
don't have much time. I would have help if I would have enough
experience but this is not the case. I found very positive all the sites
that have been done recently to help promote Firebird.

Firebird team, you've done a great job and it is really appreciated. I
would like to see your work compensated by having more users. I'll try
to see what I can do on my side to help. But don't forget ! These
questions are very important.
