This topic and the slogan topic are related. Figuring out db market
shares by installations also helps in sizing the audiences that we have
to market to. It is not just PHP:
Rough estimates of the unit size of various market segments:
- Desktop: 40 million (MS Access)
- Groupware: 5 million (LAMP, IIS/ASP, Notes, Exchange, ...)
- Client/Server: 10 million (VB, Delphi, ...)
- E-mail: 10 million (Exchange, Notes, Sendmail, ...)
- Small ERP: 7 million (countless app's, growing fast)
- Big ERP: 1 million (SAP, Oracle, PeopleSoft, ...)
I am still trying to figure out how big the app server (JBoss, BEA,
etc.) market is; perhaps it is hard to differentiate from groupware.
Perhaps e-mail is hard to separate from groupware too.
Anybody who has seen papers and interviews discussing these numbers,
please post a link to this thread.
Thanks,
Paul
