It's not caching. It's an alternate method so that the web server
doesn't have to cache all the results for showing paged results(which
a lot of good programmers try to avoid, just to increase performance).
The problem with this patent is that it's an old idea that is probably
used by many websites(probably search engines,and maybe Yahoo Groups
when paging through the messages). I'm pretty sure that this was a
method used since the web itself came into existence.

I agree software patents shouldn't exist. I could just see this
person(or company) try to tackle the big names that already use this
method.
