Actually, the idea of using record versions as
a concurrency control mechanism first occurred to
Jim in 1981 or 82 while we were still working at
DEC. He built a database there called Rdb/ELN
that used MGA/MVCC, and when it failed to find
acceptance there, he started a company around the
idea.
