Postfix is definitely designed to support a variety of db backends, and it
always annoys me that Firebird is not supported. From that POV, I think
it would be great if someone took on the challenge of adding Firebird
support. (But I still wonder if it is needed.)
re Cyrus - Afaict, it would be impossible to separate out the db without
rewriting the entire program suite. I don't think the architecture
supports the concept of swapping out the db backend. That annoys me a lot
less than something like Postfix which supports different backends. But
the fault lies with us (ie, our community) for not implementing that
support.
