This may no longer be relevant, but...

Four years ago(ish), my old employer asked me to compare Postgres with
Interbase(Had just been released as O/S).
Among other tests, I wrote a stored procedure in each database that counted
from 1 to 1 million, and inside that loop, increment, then decrement another
variable by one.

Interbase did it in a few seconds, Postgres comsumed all available RAM, Swap
space, and halted the server.

The decision was very clear from that point on...
