Yes, I remember posting that message a while ago.
Ritz-Carlton Chicago uses is but the application is written
and owned by a Buffalo, NY company, Abacus21
(www.abacus21.com). It's called "System 441", and it is
used by a few prestigious spas. clubs and resorts. Idon't
think it would be useful for a property management
business, although hotels would be very well served by it.
I was on the developers team for almost 3 years at Abacus21
and I was one of those responsible for selecting the Open
Source Interbase as the backend for the application.
Unfortunately, I left that job days before the time when I
was planning to switch to FB. There have been significant
changes in the developers' staff at Abacus21 since then.
The new developers do not seem to understand the benefits
of using Firebird, so apparently they were able to convince
the management that spending thousands on license fees was
better than porting from Interbase 6.03 to Firebird - the
management doesn't appear to care.
At the time it would have been as easy as changing the DBMS
engine, but considering the sheer size of the project (it's
huge), I doubt it whether they would even consider
switching to FB now.
Come to think about it, I am outside the non-compete period
with Abacus 21 :) I was actually considering putting
together a hotel management system myself but without the
club/spa components. These club/spa are extremely complex
in regards to business rules, which in turn are further
complicated by the fact that over the years most
establishments have created a set of their own business
rules and procedures. A pure property/hotel management
system would be a much easier task, but still not a one-man
job.
