Thats not to say free softare of this type does not exist, only that
I did not find it :-)
The worthwhile algorithms for encryption are freely available in
various languages - but that is the nature of the beast.
As a gross generalisation I would say that database encryption
generally means you have something of value to protect. It does not
seem unreasonable to expect to pay some (often only small) amount
towards protecting that value. (I did say it was a generalisation :-)

I want encrypted (not just databases) and so I would need alternative
software anyway. I prefer to choose the one effective solution to
this problem.
