The aim was to enable the search engine to run as silently and unobtrusively as possible. The search engine needs to be able to connect to the database with a known username and password. The CD is, obviously, read only. This means that the search engine must know the username and password that it is going to log onto the database with.

If SYSDBA had been used it would work on about 99% of installations and fail irrevocably on those where the password had been changed for some reason. It would be possible to actually try and register the username and password automatically - but that would delay startup. Perhaps the best solution in future will be for the app to silently try SYSDBA/masterkey first and if that fails try the hardcoded values.

The docs have been deliberately prepared to fit on the smaller, square pages - this helps reading them on screen. When printing you have the option to scale to A4.
