For what little it's worth, the fact that Firebird doesn't hold
read locks makes holding transactions open much less of a problem for
it than for many databases. Holding transactions open does inhibit
garbage collection - that's a problem for some applications but not
for others. Applications that primarily insert and select are less
affected than applications that primarily update and delete.
