I think the various apache projects may not be such great examples here
since as I understand it almost all the development is done by people paid
by eg IBM and sun to spend their time working on apache projects: this is
certainly the case for tomcat.

An example of highly successful oss project writeen entirely by volunteers
(I think, at least now noone's getting paid) is www.jboss.org, where there
is more for developers.
