If we attempt to exclude IB users we will only discourage such people
from getting involved - and as you point out we need all the help we
can get. If we follow Borlands example of attempting to be exclusive
then we will only lose people to alternative systems.
IMO the best way forward is to continue to welcome IB users. We need
to encourage all users to post the IB/FB version information with
their questions, so that appropriate answers may be given.
Given that most of the experts on these lists are firebird
developers (not IB), the "appropriate" answer may often be that the
particular problem is resolved in Firebird version xxx and that their
solution is to upgrade to that version or to take up the problem
directly with Borland.
So I am not suggesting that we need to become experts on the latest
Borland offerings, but for a long time to come questions that are
posted will apply equally to both products. So why not let all IB/FB
users participate. When the users see the friendly and helpful
community, and learn how much better the Firebird product has become,
they will be encouraged to use Firebird.
