I do not agree with what you said and here are my reasons:
1: Borland can put what ever it wants in the press release
2: they can screw Interbase however they want as long as they
hold the rights to the software and ISC can do nothing
about it, now thing have changed.
3: the squeaking wheel gets the oil, or the software I need
gets paid for first, the software I have gets paid for as
soon as I can do it. This is not a slam against ISC but
the simple fact that when you have to pay gas or electric
and you do not have enough money for both you pay the
one that will get turned off first, I have had to do exactly
that when I was young and broke. And ISC is cash poor.
4: We have a great database, its free it will stay that way
forever. If you really need ODBC you could pay the bill
for it. If I remember correctly it was about 1-2 months
work. Everybody who needs it puts up some money, Jim
gets paid and the software is available. I do not need ODBC
now, but others might. And Interbase might even set up an
ODBC sponsors page so you get some bragging rites, if you
wanted them.
5: Some people do not look at it as a matter of trust, but keeping
business and personnel separate. Jim has known the rest of ISC
for quite some time, I assume this from half remembered web
pages, and some of the ISC people are probably his friends(pure
guess). And one of the easiest ways to screw up a friendship is
to loan money, once he gives them the software it is now a loan.
It also applies to business relationships.
