What IB version?
It seems either you're using CommitRetaining like a mad or you had a
transaction open for too much time (measured not in seconds but in number of
operations on the db).
If you explain how does your application communicate with IB (ODBC, BDE,
etc.) and what types of operations you perform, maybe a better explanation
can come.
I would say that in every orphan page, you might be losing data that never
was committed and synchronized appropriately in the gdb.
