For me is better to remain non compatible and force backup and restore.
And force to use allways 5.x DLL for 5.X server and 6.x client DLL for 6.x
server.
My 20 years experience say:
do not do the last modification to the code: preserve it for the upgrade. :)
Maybe i miss something but where is the problem to backup and restore ?
