Mike:
If you review some postings from Bjrge Sther in Borland's newsgroups
(mainly interbase.public.general, I don't remember having seen any of his
postings in mers), you'll see he ran into great problems and corruptions
while he was using IB. However, he admitted he is a self taught person and
it's the first time he does a project with IB. He compared IB with other
DBMS products saying it's the most unreliable platform he has used.
Without dismissing what he did (and he found or rediscovered some obscure
bugs), I'm afraid he didn't follow any recommendation to use use IB and
also, he proceed as he could. While I see no problem in being a self taught
consultant, I think any person will sooner or later will run into trouble
due to lack of theory if he/she doesn't have strong database background. And
lacking formal theory, it's unlikely a person will realize the special
measures needed when dealing with the only commercial MGA relational engine.
Now on your specific question:
- No relational engine is certified in environments where life may be
damaged.
- I think with "mission critical" you mean your commercial services should
be up and running 24x7 or almost 24x7.
- Perhaps I have too much luck, but my databases are stable and don't
crash... and I don't visit some clients, so IB is really in auto-pilot mode.
- If the merchandise inspected and reviewed in our custom-house cannot be
entered in the IB databases that are designed for that purpose, surely one
of my friends will be notified. ;-) Before our project using IBO, Oracle had
to be installed on January 2000 but due to the decent experience with IB,
the mega-project has been delayed so they will continue using IB for this
year.
