At last! We are relieved from this ugly name.
It was preached that Inprise was "INTegrating the EnterPRISE" or something
alike, whereas Borland had no sense, because nobody could tell for sure
where the name came from and hence the need for the change. However, <rant>
only an insane like Del Yocan would replace a well stablished name for 15
years by a contrived acronym </rant> that forced me to explain my clients
that:
- Inprise didn't buy Borland,
- Inprise tools will continue being known as "Borland xxx"
- the company didn't change its owners
- the development teams didn't resign and the tools will have newer versions
- other answers to funny questions.
The most credible explanation is that Philippe Kahn took "Borland" from a
company that existed in Europe before 1980. All in all, I'm more than happy:
this is a memorable occasion where marketing lost the battle. Hope the new
owner of the Inprise Sign will make a hole 30 meters deep and will bury here
the infamous sign, in a bath of sulfuric acid.
