Subject Re: IBDI - Progress?

Kevin,

Your perceptions are appreciated. I concur that progress is slower than hoped for. But, I think a lot of your dissappointment stems from unrealistic expectations. There is a lot of valid suggestion material here and there in your post and I do feel to thank you for it. Now, what can we do to get your time, effort and energies applied to doing more than talk about it?

If you had a better idea of what has been going on behind the scenes I think you would relax your dissappointed position some... Not everything we do can meet the public eye. There are some very key individues involved behind IBDI that do prefer to remain unseen. We respect that. I hope you will take confidence that the valid concerns you raise here are either already taken care of (in an unseen way) or are in progress.

IBDI's vision isn't to compete with NewCo but to cooperate with it. Each day that comes presents a new set of challenges that must be adapted to. It's been exciting and rewarding but excedingly challenging. There is a lot of communication going that isn't in the public eye that will, in my opinion, lead to a very strong and successful relationship between InterBase NewCo and the developer community.

We want to establish where the lines need to be drawn between us, the developer community, and InterBase NewCo. Much of what you seem to be expecting IBDI to do is rightly and exclusively the job of NewCo and isn't in the vision of IBDI execution. Right now we are seeking to provide material that will assist NewCo in formulating their strategy and gameplan. We do not have, nor will we ever have, the resources to fully execute this without Inprise's cooperation. I don't see that coming nor do I think it is required since we know that InterBase isn't on the end-of-life trek now. We are much stronger united.

Please keep in mind that this all broke out less than a month ago and the IBDI is a totally from scratch, boot-strapping operation. It's been getting tugged and pulled in a lot of different directions. All of us directly involved that I know of have busy lives that must go on. I have been sleeping a lot less and seeing a lot less of my wife and kids... Same with many others in the "inner group". Why? Because we do care and are not afraid to stand in the face of criticism. We knew that it would come... Some say we are doing too much and others, well... you just can't do enough.

I am committed to do the best I can as the founder of the IBDI and appreciate all the support that we can get from the community. I know that the dozens of hours many will spend, the money invested, opportunity cost, etc. will most likely all go uncompensated... Your vote of no confidence does hurt in the heart a little when I think of everyone who has contributed so much already.

I'd like to see you roll up your sleeves and join in the ranks of the do'ers. We can't spoon feed everyone jobs here and there. What we can and are doing is providing an infrastructure for those who have an interest or specialty in someting to step forward and go to work on it. Take your pick and join in now that your $0.02 is on the table.

Regards,
Jason Wharton
