I don't really think this is an appropriate place for a licence discussion,
and I'm far from an expert, but.....

Briefly, the BSD licence does allow re-licencing as a comercial product.
Hence SunOS and other Unicies are based on Berkely Unix (or whatever it was
called) which is also what *BSD is based on.

There are many examples of BSD licenced software being used commerically -
eg the DBM libraries.

The licence states: (From
http://www.opensource.org/licenses/bsd-license.html)

Redistribution and use in source and binary forms, with or without
modification, are permitted provided that the following conditions are
met:
Redistributions of source code must retain the above copyright
notice, this list of conditions and the following disclaimer.
Redistributions in binary form must reproduce the above copyright
notice, this list of conditions and the following disclaimer in the
documentation and/or other materials provided with the distribution.
Neither name of the <ORGANIZATION> nor the names of its contributors
may be used to endorse or promote products derived from this software
without specific prior written permission.

Notice you can distibute binary only executables, in modified form - ie you
can take the code from a BSD product, and compile it into your program and
do whatever you want with your program. You used to have to advertise (put
in the about box or something) that you had used the code, but you no
longer have to.

This is well known and is one of the problems or benefits of the BSD
licence, depening on what you think.

Anyway - this is way off topic for this list. Please take this off list
unless we are discussing what we want for Interbase's licence.

Nick,

Thanks. But if it's possible to relicence and close BSD, how come it's not
commercialised and closed?
In case you are familiar with this license, would you please make a brief
review and post it to the list so everyone has an idea about it? And
provide
URLs, OK?

TIA
