That's a big question, and I'd suggest you try google to learn about
Firebird Classic (process per connection, separate page buffers,
shared memory lock manager) and Firebird SuperServer (single process,
shared page buffers, shared lock manager). There's a fair amount
that's been written about it. Also check the 2.5 release notes for
SuperClassic.
