When we discussed Java plugin, a separate document was posted here (most
likely it is still in the "Documents" section of this list at Yahoo) and
there were a lot of critics of different aspects. Some were accepted,
others were not. But I think this is a good approach to start.

lists.sourceforge.net list.

I'd say, get the Firebird sources, learn the build system, create a
dummy plugin that will be loaded by the engine, then you can start
digging into the depths of Firebird.
